The Liquitex Professional Modeling Paste is an extra heavy body and very opaque medium, made from marble dust and 100% polymer emulsion. It is used to build heavy textures on rigid supports and create three-dimensional forms. When dry, it achieves the hardness of stone and can be sanded or carved. It can be handled like clay if the top is removed and some water is allowed to slowly evaporate. It adheres to any non-oily, absorbent surface. Drying too quickly can cause mud cracking, which is usually cosmetic and not structural. When mixed with acrylic colors, it acts as a weak tinting white, while increasing thickness and rigidity. It is an excellent substrate for acrylic, oil paints, oil pastels, oil bars, watercolors, graphite, or dry pastels.
Directions:
- Apply with a knife, brush, cake decorating tools, etc.
- To prevent shrinkage cracks, dry slowly by covering loosely with plastic wrap. Apply a layer less than 1/4 inch thick.
- Mix with acrylic colors to produce a colored paste.
- When dry, it can be painted with acrylic or oil colors.
Applications:
- Sculptural: Apply in thin layers, allowing each layer to dry before the next. If cracks appear, allow to dry and fill with an additional thin layer.
- Rigid support: Use straight from the container.
- Flexible support: Mix 50/50 with Gloss Gel Medium, Matt Gel Medium, Gloss Heavy Gel Medium, or Super Heavy Gel Medium.
- Ground: Apply a thin layer to a rigid surface (e.g., wood), using a palette knife, trowel, or roller. Let dry, then sand smooth. Repeat if necessary.
- Absorbent ground: Mix 1 part paste with 3 parts Liquitex Acrylic Gesso. Apply with a trowel or roller. Let dry, then sand smooth. Repeat if necessary.
- Paper-mâché: Mix 50/50 with Gloss Gel Medium, Matt Gel Medium, or Gloss Heavy Gel Medium. Soak paper in this mixture.
